Apply: John 1:14

Yesterday was a busy day at SGC!  We had a wonderful worship service in the morning.  Thank you so much for gathering together once again to worship and receive from the Lord.  We continue to be so grateful to God for how He meets us.  Then, last night we had our annual Leaders Banquet.  We had a wonderful time thanking and honoring our Care Group leaders for “their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and their love for all the saints” (Eph. 1:15).  Our Care Group leaders continue to excel in providing gracious care to you and we simply can’t thank God enough for these dear men and women.  And now, we look forward to Care Group parties, the 316 Christmas Banquet; Access’ Night of Hope Banquet, our Christmas Service on the 20th and our Christmas Eve Service on the 24th!  It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Yesterday we studied John 1:14 to discover that Jesus is God.  And most importantly, Jesus is God with us. As you know, the gospels are all about Jesus!  So when we think about applying this verse from the gospel of John to our lives, it’s going to have something to do with how we see Christ, believe Him, trust Him, thank Him, worship Him, etc.  As we saw yesterday, the incarnation tells us that God cares.  God was willing to enter the chaos and mess of our fallen world in HIs Son  in order bring salvation to the world.  God is also willing to enter into the chaos and messes of our lives brought about by sin in order to bring salvation, transformation and redemption to us as well.  I hope these questions will help you apply the Word to your life so that you can be changed!

1)  Do you believe that Jesus is fully God?  How would you explain the deity of Christ to someone?

2)  How does the incarnation prove to you that God cares about you?

3)  In what area of your life do you think the Lord wants you to BELIEVE that He cares about you?  Finances? Health? Relationships? Children?  School? Provision? Growth in godliness?

4)  How can you resist the lie that God is far away from you, or has forgotten you, or doesn’t care?

5)  In what ways over the past year have you experienced God “rolling up His sleeves” in your life to help you, save you, or change you?  Doesn’t this give you hope to believe that in His faithfulness to you He will continue to do the same?

Tomorrow Morning at SGC

Good evening everyone!  I hope you are having a great night.  We are looking forward to gathering tomorrow morning as a church family to worship the Lord.  We are going to start our morning at 9:00 in the Spurgeon Room for all who want to join us for prayer for the service.  Then we will begin our service at 10:00 with a time of praise and worship.  Jordan Smith will lead us in song and we’re planning on learning a new song from the Sons and Daughters CD called “We Sing.”

We are also taking a break from our series in Galatians to study the Incarnation.  Our sermon series called “Fully God, Fully Man, Born this Day” will lead up to our Christmas service on December 20th and our Christmas Eve service on December 24th.  Tomorrow morning we will study the deity of Christ from John 1:14.  Jesus Christ is fully God and this truth from God’s word will bring us hope tomorrow.

We will see you tomorrow Lord willing!

Back in my day….Christmas Trees

When I was growing up we had a tradition that occurred the day after Thanksgiving.  Our family would travel out to the country to the Christmas tree farm.  There amidst acres of woodland we would find “just the right” tree and then tag it.   A couple of weeks before Christmas we would return and my brother and I would cut our tree down and take it home.  There was something heartwarming about having a real tree in your house with the fragrance of Evergreen or Spruce filling the air.

One Christmas, when my son was just a toddler we realized that my wife had significant allergies.  Our live Christmas tree was the agent of our discovery.  The remedy was obvious — the live tree would have to go.  But what would we replace it with?  The only other option was to purchase an artificial tree.  I was reluctant to do that.  As a kid, the only place I ever saw “fake” trees was at the gas station or in the supermarket.  Typically those “Charlie Brown specials” looked like large green pipe cleaners wired to a green pole.  The debate between Calvinism and Arminianism is nothing compared to the kinds of discussions that occur over the appropriate type of Christmas decorations one is to diplay.  Husbands and wives have wrestled with questions like: tinsel or garland,  matching ornaments or assorted ornaments, and of course the most important question — white lights or colored lights?  I’m from the north so you know which ones I would use.  However, I married a southern girl and so every year I joyfully string the little, non-blinking, white lights all around our tree.

But I digress.  The “tree” question was answered for me.    Much to my surprise artificial trees have come a long way in 30 years.  They don’t shed needles, there’s no throat-closing Pine pollen, their shape is perfect and they last a long time!  One of our holiday traditions is to get out the Christmas decorations the day after Thanksgiving.  What fun it was last Friday to begin decorating for the upcoming season.  My kids couldn’t wait to go and get our tree from the place where all Christmas trees come from — a box in the attic!  My son ably affixed the branches to the metal pole according to the color-coded chart while my daughters gleefully contemplated the location for each of their favorite assorted ornaments.  Truth be told, live tree or artificial tree doesn’t seem to make much of a difference.  The time together as a family, remembering last year’s fun, and anticipating new memories just around the corner is what kindles the fire of laughter and excitement.  So, how about you?  What are some of your holiday traditions?

Merrily,

Brett

Ever Heard of Wordle?

I came across this cool program / website called “Wordle”.  Here’s the deal: you can copy a bunch of text into the program, then it creates a Word Cloud of all the words.  It takes the words that have been used most and makes them larger in the picture and the words used less are smaller.  So, the cool thing is the cloud that pops out shows a picture of emphasis.  Let me give you two examples:

1)  This first one is the “Wordle” for the entire book of Galatians!  I placed all the content of Galatians from the ESV in and this is what came out:

2)  This “Wordle” is from the sermon I gave on justification by faith alone from Galatians 2:15-21:

3)  And this one is from last Sunday’s sermon on Galatians 3:6-14:

Pretty cool, huh!?!
