Summit Men’s Retreat

Screen shot 2009-09-18 at 10.24.07 AMUpdate from Western Virginia!  Kirk, Chris, Brett and I are here in Lynchburg, VA with about 80 men from SGC and already God is at work!  Dave Harvey spoke last night on a definition of ambition, the need for ambition, and the ingredients of godly ambition.  We chase after what we love.  Will we love the glory that comes frphoto(2)om man or the glory that comes from God?  Will we perceive, prize and pursue glorifying God with our lives?  These thoughts and questions are challenging our souls.  Worship has been wonderful as well.  And, not a surprise, some fun as well.  Chris Mangold got second place rapping in front of 400 men accompanied by our own Brian Wasko on the beatbox!

Already we are looking forward to returning home to apply what we’ve learned – and we just got here!  Already we look forward to telling our friends who were unable to attend this time all that we’re learning!  Is your husband here or your son, your caregroup leader, your grandson, your dad or your friend?  Please pray for them and for all of us.  We have 3 sessions left and a workshop – may God continue to work in us here.  And may God be at work in where you are today!

Grace to you,

Eric

Hello from Chris

Hey everyone, I am excited that Eric is taking us into the blogosphere. I pray that this place will be a good way for you to receive encouragement, updates, and get a peek into our world as well. I must admit that to this point I have not been a strong blogger. I have posted, but only to spread the word on the birth of our youngest daughter. Since she is now well over a year old, you can get a feel for how often I have posted on blogs!  So I will make you all a deal… if you read this thing, I will commit to post on it much more frequently! In fact, I encourage you to give me feedback so I know you are actually reading this from time to time. Screen shot 2009-09-16 at 1.19.44 PM

I hope to post about upcoming events and happenings in the realm of Care Groups, Children’s Ministry, Next Step, and 316. Thanks Brett for highlighting grace in one of our outstanding CM teams on your post earlier!  For teens and Next Stepper’s I may even drop hints or even give a small prize to the first person who can answer my question on here (in person!) and stuff like that. (Note to younger teens – always make sure your parents are o.k. with you going on-line – don’t get me in trouble over this!)

First things first, I notice that my blogger bio stated that I host a TV show called “Chris the Carpenter.” For integrity’s sake I must disclose that no TV network has picked my show up (yet). However, if you would like to see a live show (and help out!), my next project will be window and sliding glass door replacements. My order is expected to come in early to mid October, and I am looking to replace 7 windows and 2 sliding glass doors. If interested in helping, let me know and you can come out and at least learn how NOT to do it! J After that it will be wrapping the trim in PVC coil and installing vinyl siding, then finally a potential garage conversion. What fun!

I woke up this morning keenly aware of my need for God’s grace and sustaining power today, so I leave you with 1 Corinthians 12:9: “… ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

A Heart for the Children

Saturdays are usually pretty quiet around the church.  With the exception of the pastors there isn’t usually a lot of traffic.  However, on one recent Saturday, as I was headed out I noticed a classroom door open.  When I reached the room I popped my head in and found Cynthia Rickards with some kind of craft project in her hand.  Her son, Reed was at a table working on something as well.  I asked her what she was up to.  She smiled and told me she was getting her classroom ready for “move up” Sunday.  Her enthusiasm for this assignment was obvious.

Picture 1

She and Martha Bixler team teach the 6 year olds in our Children’s Ministry.  I looked around the room and my eyes took in various letters, colorful designs, and scripture passages displayed in creative ways.  This didn’t look like a classroom it looked more like a kid’s play area, alive with excitement!  Cynthia went on to tell me how she loved the kids and the opportunity to teach them each week.  She was eager to meet them the next day.  !

Cynthia’s children are beyond the age of participating in our Children’s Ministry.  Yet, for a number of years now she has taught the little boys and girls in these classes.  Teaching a small child anything is no easy task, just ask the nearest parent.  Multiply the number of kids by 5 or 10 and you’ve got a sizeable challenge.  Cynthia probably wouldn’t describe it that way though.  She is committed to playing her part in seeing that the 6 year olds in our church know the Gospel.  Through her creativity, gifting and patience she’s also helping these little ones come to know the God behind the Gospel.  Her extra efforts make a difference in what the children experience each week.  As both she and Martha serve in this way they are exemplifying Paul’s admonition, “ Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ” (Col 3:23,24).  Because of this kind of attitude, it was no surprise the next day when I heard my six year old daughter tell me how much fun she had in her class!  She was eager to show me her letter (from the “A,B,C’s of God”) and recite her memory verse.

I’m so thankful that I ran into Cynthia that Saturday.  It reminded me of the many blessings God has poured on our church in the form of people.  He’s using folks like Cynthia and Martha, along with many others to build His Church.

Apply: God is God

This morning we were reminded that God is God!  Reminders are often simple but can be powerful.  We hope these questions help you to apply what God wants you to apply from His word.

1)  How was your thinking about God refreshed this morning? Were you encouraged by His greatness, glory, power, majesty, nearness, mercy and grace?

2)  God is real and made everything we see, therefore we must acknowledge Him (Gen. 1:1, Rom. 1:18-22).  How often do you think about God during the day? How do you plan to acknowledge God this week by making Him a part of your day? How can we remind each other that God is the most fundamental reality in the universe, not our circumstances?

3)  God owns the rights to all He has made, therefore we must fear Him (Acts 17:22-31, Heb. 4:13).  Why do we forget that what we say, think, and do matters to God?  In what place in your life do you need to be more aware that you live your life before the face of God?  What does it look like for you to fear God?  In what area of your life is the grace of God available to you to help you grow in holiness aware of the presence of God?

4)  God sovereignly cares for those who are His, therefore we must trust Him (Psalm 121).  Why do we so easily worry, doubt and give in to unbelief?  How has God been near to you to specifically care for you in the past?  What promise from God’s word should you have “in your back pocket” this week to remind you to trust Him?

5)  God is worthy of our praise, therefore we must worship Him (Psalm 145).  How do your thoughts of God help or hinder your worship of God?  Are there any ways the Lord is stirring your heart regarding expressiveness?

Thank you for being a church eager to apply God’s word!

Tomorrow Morning

Summer is over!  School is back in session.  Our transition has been made. Our summer speakers have come and gone.  The fall is here.  And we are very excited to gather as a church tomorrow!  Jordan Smith will be leading us as we sing to Lord.  We will also be taking communion together tomorrow morning during worship. blue-worship-hand2-1Tomorrow we are also going to begin our REMEMBER Series.  I will be preaching the first  3 sermons, which we hope will  “stir us up by way of reminder.”  I’ll explain more in the morning!  We can’t wait to see you, to worship God, to experience His Spirit, to hear from God’s word and to fellowship together yet again.

See you in the morning, Lord willing!

Eric

Apply: Great Commission

Can we participate in the Great Commission even if we don’t find ourselves in a foreign nation?  This question was asked of us last Sunday as Dave Harvey preached from Matthew 28:16-20.  The clear answer is YES!  God’s mission, His Great Commission, is accomplished in and through the church!  The gospel expands and advances throughout the world as churches are planted and mature.  Each gospel-preaching church assumes the responsibility to continue to evangelize their  area until all that are His come to Him through Christ in all the world.  God’s mission is also accomplished through the heroic efforts of individuals  like David Brainerd, Hudson Taylor, Amy Carmichael, Adoniram Judson and many more, who are called by God to break ground and go to the nations or unreached people groups.  Who doesn’t look forward to meeting men and women like these and others in heaven someday!?!  So what about us?  How are we to participate in His glorious cause on the earth today through the church?  How does the Lord want us to apply what we’ve heard?

1)  Are you convinced and in faith that God wants to advance His kingdom through you?

2)  How do you think God wants to use you given your specific season of life or situation in life?  (Student, Employee, Husband, Mom, Friend, Neighbor, Teen, etc.)

3)  Is there someone God is laying on our heart to share the gospel with this week?  Pray and go for it – He will be with us always, even to the end of the age!

4)  What are ways that you or your  family can reach out to those around you?

5)  What are ways that we as a church can be more effective in reaching out to the lost around us?

Please email us any testimonies from #3 and any suggestions for #4 and #5 at church@sgconline.org.  We’d be happy to post ideas and testimonies.

We are grateful for you and excited about the ways God wants to use us as a church to more effectively reach our area with the gospel.

Grace to you today,

Eric
